Who Are We

Gender Care Initiative (GCI) is a non-governmental, non-profit organization dedicated to the empowerment and development of women and young people. To this end, it advocates the provision and promotion of programs and policies that will enhance the lives of women and young people from rights based perspective. Established in 2000, GCI is registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission under Part C (RC 15278).

How We Work

Our Targets/Beneficiaries are Women & Young People 

Our general objectives:

  • To promote gender equality and mainstreaming in policies, laws and all spheres of life in Nigeria, thereby advancing good governance, transparency, accountability and sustainable development.  
  • To advocate for increased support, commitment and funding of women & young people’s issues and programs by key stakeholders and the public in general. 
  • To advance empowerment of women & young people.
  • To create public knowledge and understanding of women & young people’s rights and issues through advocacy, research, policy analysis and education. 
  • To collect, process, document, and disseminate information on women & young people’s rights through publications, resource centre, workshops, and use of ICT.
  • To build GCI’s capacity for excellent services and strengthen the technical and organizational capacities and scope of other non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and civil society organizations (CSOs) involved in women & young people’s rights issues.

Rights Advancement/Gender Mainstreaming & Empowerment

  • To promote the eradication of all forms of violence, abuse, trafficking and harmful traditional practices against women.
  • To promote women’s inheritance rights and access to land. 
  • To promote economic and social empowerment and economic independence of women/ young people.
  • To advocate for increased participation of women in governance, leadership, decision making, and peacemaking and equip the women with necessary skills to function effectively.
  • To encourage government & organizations to develop and implement gender-sensitive programs and policies.
  • To promote gender sensitize budgeting as a tool for sustainable development, social justice and poverty reduction.
  • To analyze government policies and laws from a gender based perspective to and to educate the public on the same.
  • To advance Nigeria ratification of international standards on women/young people and monitor compliance on same and other national standards.
  • To increase women & young people’s access to information and education through publications, establishment of resource centre and use of technology. 

Health/Reproductive Health

  • To advance sexual & reproductive health/rights issues including HIV/AIDS/STIs, etc prevention, support and care services to women and young people.
  • To promote community-based maternal health services including but not limited to safe motherhood, family planning, etc.
  • To create awareness and educate the public on cancers- prevention and management.
  • To promote immunization as a preventive health services.
  • To promote child health & care services such as immunization, nutrition education, oral health, etc.
  • To promote the elimination of Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) especially Soil-transmitted helminthiasis (Worms).
  • To provide free interpersonal counseling on sexual & reproductive health & rights, cancers, and other women health issues.

Governance

Board of Trustees

GCI has a seven-member board of trustees that oversees the affairs of the organization. They include – Bar (Mrs) O. Obi, Dr (Mrs) N.J Okezie-Nebe, Professor F.C. Okoli, Dr A.N Onyeze, Dr J.N. Ijezie, Dr(Mrs) Janefrancis I. Duru and Mrs I.J Uchendu

Advisory Board

An advisory board constituted from different facts of life and made up of people who have distinguished themselves in their various fields of endeavours help shape the program thrust of the organization.

Management Board

The board manages the daily affairs of GCI. The board is made up of the directors of the different departments with the Executive Director as the Chairman.

Volunteer Services

GCI has volunteer corps, which helps in project implementation and monitoring or by contributing materially and financially to our services. Join our Corps and render a selfless service to humanity
